I'm hunting in a pine thicket.  There's literally hundreds of rubs in there.  During bow season, I saw four bucks running together.  One was real nice! In the 140 B&C range.  One was medium size and two small ones.  I watched this buck for 20 minutes before shooting him.  I hoped the big boy was with him but guess not.  He was just about out to deep in the thicket to shoot.  It was shoot or let him go.

First deer of afternoon: I had been in the stand for around 20 minutes.  It's a hanging stand in a planted pine thicket.  The pines are around 10-12 inches in diameter with lots of under growth.  I saw a deer moving from right to left.  It was doe and she was in heat being chased by a buck or had dogs after her.  She was wet with sweat and had her tongue ran out panting.  I had not heard a dog bark, so I got ready.  I saw bone moving in the pines.  I have one small window to shoot through.  The buck would be around 50 yards away.  When he walked in the opening I put the crosshairs on the front shoulder and squeezed the trigger.  He took off scooting on his nose.  I had no doubt it was a good shot but he didn't go down.  I looked with the binoculars for him but it was too thick.  After 30 minutes or so of waiting, I saw a doe close to the field and shot her.  The landowner wants some doe harvested and it would be easy to load.  If I've got to dress one ... two is not much worse.  I started tracking the buck and found him still alive.  Must have been the adrenaline.  He was hit good with a 7-Mag and Ballistic Tip.  He was 40 yards away and looking at me.  I shot him right under the chin and that did it.  You can see both shots in the bottom picture - one in the shoulder and one under the chin.  He weighed 170 lbs - I had to drag him 200 yards - had I known he had one side of the rack broken off ... I'd let him walk.
