Archery Season
2010-2011

Twenty-one straight years with at least one deer by bow

Deer #5

Deer: Doe
Weight:
85 lbs.
Date:
November 11, 2010
Time:
4:00pm
Location:
Madison County, AL
Weapon:
Matthews Switchback Bow
Arrow: Carbon Express Maxima 250
Broadhead: Muzzy MX-4 100gr. - 4 blade
Treestand: Loc-On
Range: 20 yards
Distance Deer Traveled: 30 yards

This is the new property in Madison County.  Last year was my first year to hunt the property.  It's close to New Market.  I had several deer come through eating browse and moving through the creek bottom.  I shot this small doe.  The landowner wants several deer for the freezer.  She's a 1.5 year old doe - he was happy to get her.  Look at the damage the Muzzy left on exit - Bad to the Bone!

Deer #4

Deer: Doe
Weight:
125 lbs.
Date:
October 27, 2010
Time:
6:00pm
Location:
Jackson County, AL
Weapon:
Matthews Switchback Bow
Arrow: Carbon Express Maxima 250
Broadhead: Muzzy MX-4 100gr. - 4 blade
Treestand: Gorilla
Range: 35 yards
Distance Deer Traveled: 40 yards

Saw several deer but none in bow range.  Lots of White and Red Oak acorns dropping.  With that many acorns on the ground ... had to pinpoint where the deer will eat.  Finally, this big doe got within range.  There was a fallen tree that I'd shot with the range finder.  On the far side of the tree would be 40+ yards - on the near side would be 35 or less.  She was feeding toward the fallen tree.  I decided if she went on the near side I'd shoot - otherwise would be to far.  She walked right next to the tree and I shot her.  I don't like shooting that far at deer.  Prefer 20 yards broadside with them perfectly calm.  She only ran 40 yards.  Muzzy's are Bad to the Bone!  This property is a small piece of land - 60 acres.  It's mostly big hardwoods. I'm the only one that hunts it and the landowner wants a couple of deer for his freezer and his brother wants a couple.  He was happy to get her for the freezer.

Deer #3

Deer: Spike
Weight:
125 lbs.
Date:
October 25, 2010
Time:
5:30pm
Location:
Giles County, TN
Weapon:
Matthews Switchback Bow
Arrow: Carbon Express Maxima 250
Broadhead: Muzzy MX-4 100gr. - 4 blade
Treestand: Loc-On
Range: 15 yards
Distance Deer Traveled: 0 yards

I had the deer sneak in behind me.  He was walking away.  When he got to a shooting hole, I made a grunt sound and he stopped.  I could only see the spine above the kill.  Lots of limbs in the way of the kill area.  I shot him in the spine - that was my only shot.  He dropped right on the spot.  I got 7-trays of jerky in the dehydrator!

Deer #2

Deer: 7-point
Weight:
155 lbs.
Date:
October 21, 2010
Time:
5:30pm
Location:
Giles County, TN
Weapon:
Matthews Switchback Bow
Arrow: Carbon Express Maxima 250
Broadhead: Muzzy MX-4 100gr. - 4 blade
Treestand: Loc-On
Range: 20 yards
Distance Deer Traveled: 50 yards

I saw several doe early in the afternoon and had this buck and spike come through at 5:30.  I'm hunting an area between some cutover and hardwoods.  It's very thick in there with several good trails.  Last year, I hunted the hardwoods a lot and had deer show up at dark.  I decided to try and catch them before they get to the hardwoods.  It worked out perfect.  The deer stopped broadside at 20-yards.  The Muzzy did a great job!  Glad to harvest this dude!

Deer #1

Deer: Doe
Weight:
100 lbs.
Date:
October 20, 2010
Time:
5:00pm
Location:
Morgan County, AL
Weapon:
Matthews Switchback Bow
Arrow: Carbon Express Maxima 250
Broadhead: G5 T3 100gr.
Treestand: Gorilla
Range: 15 yards
Distance Deer Traveled: 75 yards

The doe came in walking directly at my stand.  My stand is on the edge of some Mountain Oak trees.  She presented no shot until she walked right under my stand.  I could see her through the grates in the treestand.  Can't believe she didn't smell where I walked in.  When she crossed under my stand, she got downwind and spooked.  Ran 15-yards out, stopped and I shot her.  I decided to try a G5 broadhead to see if it would change my luck.  Seen a few deer but not enough:)

Season Updates 2010-11

This is my bow hunting combination:

Matthews Switchback Bow

My hunting arrow is 350 grains - 29" Carbon Express MAXIM 250 - Muzzy MX-4 100gr - dipped in white paint - crested - three 4" white feathers
I reduced the draw weight on my bow to 62#'s - yea, I'm a baby - It's shooting 280 fps at 62#'s through the chronograph - 30" draw.

On Saturday night - during the bow work - I measured the draw weight - it was bottomed out and pulling 73#'s.  At 73#'s, it was shooting 310 fps through the chronograph - 30" draw with 350gr arrow.  Mathews claims 318 fps with a 350gr arrow at 30" draw set to 70 lbs.  I didn't get 318 fps.  IBO speed (like you see listed for bows) is measured with a 350gr arrow at 30" draw set to 70 lbs.
