December 24th (Wed-PM) – I hunted the farm.  Saw three deer. No horns.

December 22nd (Mon-PM) – Austin and I hunted at the Jackson County club.  He predicted a deer would come out at 4:52 by this big oak tree.  Sure enough, the first deer we saw was at 4:52 on the left side of the tree :)  We waited for the deer to calm down and start to feed.  It offered a broadside shot at 110 yards.  Austin fired and the deer ran off like it was hit hard.  It had it's tail down and digging.  We waited for 15 minutes and eased down to look for blood.  We jumped the deer - not a good sign.  We went back to camp for the lantern and better lights.  We looked for 2+ hours and did not find the deer.  It's weird - we knew exactly where the deer was standing - where it went in the woods - it ran off like a hit deer - staying around for 20 minutes until we jumped it - however we could find no blood.  After we jumped it - when it ran off it had it's tail down and looked hurt.  Strange situation.

December 22nd (Mon-AM) – We scouted at the Jackson County club. Found some decent sign for the afternoon hunt.

November 15th (Sat-PM) – We hunted at the Jackson County club.  Austin and I saw one small doe - to small to shoot - around 60 lbs.  Kim and Amber saw zero.

November 14th (Fri) – I shot both of the kids rifles.  Just making sure they're still shooting well.  We have not shot them in a few weeks.  Over the summer, I reworked my Remington 270Win for Amber to use this year.  She wanted something with a little more punch that the 243Win. I put a new Medalist full aluminum bedded stock on it and reworked the trigger.  I took the trigger assembly apart.  Cleaned it with acetone and smoothed everything out with a file and sandpaper.  Sprayed the parts with light oil and worked the oil in with a rag.  Put it back together and it shoots great.  It shoot a one hole three shot group at 100 yards off sand bags.

November 10th (Mon) – Trail Camera pictures updated - some bucks with a couple of pretty nice ones. 2008 Trail Camera Pictures

November 8th (Sat-PM) – Austin and I hunted at the Jackson County hunting club.  Saw zero deer.

November 7th (Fri-PM) – I hunted at the Jackson County hunting club.  Saw zero deer.

November 6th (Thurs) – New coveralls and camera arrived.  Coveralls fit Amber - Men's Size Medium.  Been setting up the new camera.  It's much more complicated than the ones I've been using.  Don't know if that's a good thing or not.

November 3rd (Mon) – I ordered Amber a new set of coveralls - she's now 5' 10" and outgrown most of her hunting clothes.  At least Austin can wear most of them.  I also ordered a new Leaf River Trail Camera.

November 1st (Sat-PM) – I scouted/hunted on the refuge.  Saw three deer. The mosquitoes were still bad!  I saw three deer in a large field 200 yards away.

October 29th (Wed-PM) – I hunted the farm.  Saw zero deer.

October 28th (Tues-AM) – Saw three deer on the refuge on the way into work.

October 24th (Sat-PM) – I hunted the farm.  Saw zero deer.

October 23rd (Fri-PM) – I hunted the farm.  Saw zero deer. It rained Thursday night and Friday until lunch.  The afternoon was good weather.  Six straight hunts on the farm without a single deer event.  I haven't seen a deer while hunting or jumped a deer entering/leaving.  Not many deer in that area of the county.

October 22nd (Thurs-PM) – I hunted the farm.  Saw zero deer. It was windy with rain on the way.

October 22nd (Thurs) – I talked with Ronnie today.  He was on the way to Pike County, Illinois for a bow hunt.  Lucky dog!

October 22nd   (Wed-PM) – I scouted/hunted on the refuge.  Saw three deer. The mosquitoes were horrible!  I saw three deer in a large bean field 300 yards away.

October 21st (Tues-PM) – I hunted the farm.  Saw zero deer. It was good weather.  Maybe next time.

October 21st (PM) – Check out this trail cam picture.  The buck has one long cowhorn spike on the right side.  A lot of "deer experts" claim a deformed rack on one side represents an injury to the opposite or same side during velvet growth.  Check out the "Black Eye".  The other side is not black.  It shows up on several photos not just this one.  Could it be a injury still healing after several months?  Maybe a snake bite, barb wire fence or vehicle injury?  I harvested a 7pt on opening morning of bow season many years ago with a snake bite on his shoulder - must have laid down on the snake.  The deer seemed to be fine.  The wound was healed - just a spot the size of a baseball with no hair and two puncture marks in it the size of a pencil eraser.  The rack deal could also be age.  This deer has most likely feasted on soybeans (Mega Protein) all summer.  It looks like a younger deer.  The rack may have grown a lot due to the protein and the deer is not mature enough for more points and mass - notice the lack of mass throughout the rack and small base.  He has the characteristics of a 2.5 year old deer - small hind quarters, narrow shoulders and long body (not that compact look of a mature deer).  Thoughts?

October 20th (Mon-PM) – I hunted the farm.  Saw zero deer. It was good weather with a wind out of the S - perfect for one stand on some oak trees.  Three hunts in a row without seeing a single deer - welcome to Morgan County hunting at it's finest :)  I'm just glad people can harvest two doe a day with a firearm from opening day through January 24th ... we have to many deer :)

October 19th (Sun) – Trail Camera pictures updated - some bucks with a couple of pretty nice ones. 2008 Trail Camera Pictures  2006 Trail Camera Pictures

October 18th (Sat-PM) – I hunted the farm.  Saw zero deer. It was very windy however the wind was out of the NE - perfect for one stand on a red oak.  I heard acorns dropping during the afternoon.  Once the white oaks start dropping, the deer seem to leave the red oaks.

October 16th (Thursday-AM) – I hunted the farm.  Got in the stand 45 minutes before daylight and stayed till 10am.  Saw zero deer. The weather was perfect - SW wind. I had high hopes but typical Morgan County hunting.  Some folks were coon hunting close by the previous night and their dogs got loose.  I heard barking all morning and two dogs were at my truck when I came out - bummer!

October 13th (Mon) – Austin and I stayed at the farm most of the day.  We checked the cameras, put up three hanging stands and did some scouting.  We found a few red oaks falling but no white oak acorns. Austin did some shooting.  Mostly 22LR but did shoot the new 300 Win Mag. He loves shooting the 22 - we'll setup some plastic bottles and stuff for him to shoot at. Kim and Amber have been at Panama City Beach with some friends since Friday (fall holiday at school).

October 5th (Sat) – Austin and I stayed at the farm most of the day.  We did some scouting and a lot of shooting.  Shot the 22LR, both 243's, 270 and 300 Win Mag.

August – Worked up a load for the 300 Win Mag Encore barrel.

                                Brass - Lapua
                                Bullet - Nosler AccuBond - 165 grains
                                Powder - Hodgdon 1000 - 82.0 grains
                                Primer - CCI Mag

                                Velocity - 3100 FPS

July – Ordered a new barrel for my T/C Encore from a custom gunsmith in Oklahoma.  It's a 300 Win Mag barrel with 8 rows of 4 angle ports.  It should cut down on recoil by 50% or more - something along the lines of a 270 Win or less.

July – Ordered a components to load 300 Win Mag rounds.  Forester Bonanza Die, Lapua Brass and Nosler Accubond bullets.

July – Bummer!  The web host rolled back my website to November 26, 2006.  I lost everything from that date forward.  I updated some of the stuff but the details are lost.  My daily log of updates are gone!  They claim to backup the site but it seems they did not.  Lessons learned - I'll perform my own backups from now on.
