2004-2005 Hunting Season
I'm hunting everyday - seeing a few deer but mostly 1.5 year old bucks and doe.
January 18, 2005 - Saw small 6-point. He walked right by me at 50 yards. To small to shoot.
January 17, 2005 - Saw several deer. Saw nice mature buck but couldn't get a shot. He was 330 yards (according to rangefinder). I had a decent prop but once I had him in the scope, he was walking away from me and never presented a good shot angle. Looked like a big body deer (200 lb. range) with a nice rack. Not a monster but a decent 8 or so. Wide with short points - 2-3" outside the ears on each side - which on a 200lb deer is pretty wide. Looked like G2's were 8" and G3's short - no idea about browtines - decent mass.
January 16, 2005 - Saw small spike or 4-point. Watched him for 20 minutes at 50 yards. To small to shoot.
January 14, 2005 - Amber harvested deer today - 6-point.
January 11, 2005 - Saw two small bucks - not big enough to shoot. One was a small spike and one a 4-point. This is the second or third time to see the 4-point. I plan to try and get Amber a shot at him.
January 8, 2005 - Saw several deer including 4-point. To small to shoot.
January 5, 2005 - Saw four deer but no bucks.
January 2, 2005 - Amber harvested deer today.
December 30, 2004 - It's cold and the deer are hibernating.
December 27, 2004 - Seeing zero deer - hunting everyday.
December 22, 2004 - I've seen 2 deer my last 10 hunts on the Morgan County land - not much going on. Starting tomorrow, I'm off work for several days and plan to do some serious scouting. I've found some big deer sign but have yet to lay eyes on him.
December 15, 2004 - Harvested a deer today with a Muzzleloader.
December 14, 2004 - Harvested a deer today with a rifle.
December 8, 2004 - Harvested a deer today with a Muzzleloader.
December 7, 2004 - I'm seeing basically zero deer on our land in Morgan County. It's tough hunting.
December 3, 2004 - Harvested a deer today with a Muzzleloader.
November 28, 2004 - I hunted the last 5 days from a treestand - saw very few deer - all doe. Not uncommon for our land in Morgan County but still discouraging. The knee has limited my walking ability to scout and I'm forced to hunt from one of the stands I already have hung. No way I can use a climbing stand with the knee. The knee is getting better but it's still slow go!
November 22, 2004 - Doctor said knee is progressing well. It's still swollen like a watermelon and painful.
November 21, 2004 - Amber and I hunted with Austin. The three of us didn't see any deer.
November 20, 2004 - Can barely walk but haven't missed opening morning in 15 years. I hunted off the ground in an old abandoned shed overlooking a field. Saw no deer but it was nice to be out of the house.
November 15, 2004 - First day of Muzzleloader season - which I've been looking forward to. At hospital having knee surgery. Looks like the deer got a break :) He removed the torn cartilage and scraped the bottom of the kneecap - Ouch!!
November 13, 2004 - Amber and I hunted on the Alabama Youth Deer Hunting Day. Austin was sick and didn't go - he was heart broken! We didn't see any deer. It's tough hunting in Morgan County - I miss our club in Tennessee!
November 10, 2004 - Harvested deer in Madison County.
November 6, 2004 - The kids and I shot rifles today. Amber shot well with the 243 - Austin shot her gun for the first time. He loved it - hit the dot on the first shot. The recoil was rough on him - he needs a couple more years to be ready for a deer rifle. He's good with the 22LR. We had a blast shooting.
October 25, 2004 - Hunting almost everyday - seeing a few deer - all doe. No shots.
October 10, 2004 - Having a lot of problems with right knee. Ortho Doc said MRI shows torn cartilage in right knee - surgery imminent.
October 8, 2004 - Hung a couple of hanging stands - lots of acorns. A little deer sign.
September 22, 2004 - Today, I received a free crossbow package from Horton Crossbows for an upcoming article.
September 20, 2004 - The hunting season has started off with a bang! Dove season has been really good - the best in years. Peaches is getting old but still doing well. She's still a joy to hunt with at 11-years old. The kids are having a blast! They love the outdoors and hunting.
September 19, 2004 - My article on Tracking Deer was published in the October issue of the Alabama Game and Fish. Magazine arrived over the weekend.
September 18, 2004 - Dove hunted at the opening day field. It was awesome again! I had a limit in an hour or so. I've got quite a few birds in the freezer for our next camping trip. Peaches did outstanding - especially for 11-years old!
September 12, 2004 - Dove hunted another location. Had several birds but nothing like opening day. Amber shot two. I didn't shoot - just helped her.
September 11, 2004 - Dove season opened. It was a great shoot! Amber shot 3 and had a blast. All the adults in the field got a limit pretty easy. I helped Amber and didn't shoot until Jim had a limit and helped Amber. I had a limit in under an hour with just over a box of shells. It was the most birds in several years.
August 15, 2004 - Shot skeet with Amber, Austin, Jim, Brook and Michael. Amber, Austin and Brook shot the 22 rifle. They all did very well with the rifle. Amber did well shooting the skeet. She's having a ball with that little Benelli!
August 2004 - We will not have the lease in Tennessee this season. The land was sold and it's not working out with the new owner. That's a bummer!
April 2004 - My article on Youth Rifles was published in the April issue of Wishigan Outdoors Magazine.
