2002-2003 Hunting Season

August 3, 2002 - I'm in the process of joining a club in Hale County for this season - Hopefully. I'm excited about it and hope it works out. I bought a dozen shafts and almost got them ready to go. I plan to start shooting quite a bit in the afternoons and weekends.

August 23, 2002 - I joined the club in Hale County - I don't know much about the land but should find out more as we have some work weekends coming up. It has looks of thick pine plantings that offer the deer mega cover and browse. It should be fun to try and figure out how to catch one coming out into the hardwood draws.

September 10, 2002 - Dove season has finally opened and we had a good time again this year. We didn't have very many birds but some good company. I carried the kids last Sunday and they had a blast. Here's a link to some pictures I took.

September 11, 2002 - The acorns have started to fall and I've got a good feeling about this hunting season :)

September 14, 2002 - After 8 or 9 years of shooting the same bow, I finally broke down and bought a new one. Technology had finally surpassed the old bow so much I really wanted the increased benefits. I was able to pick up almost 30 ft/sec shooting the same weight arrow.

September 22, 2002 - This weekend was a working session at the hunting club I joined in Hale County. We planted somewhere around 25 food plots with wheat, oats and rye. My legs and back's sore from getting bounced around on one of the tractors - other than that it was a good session.

October 01, 2002 - I've got my new bow shooting well and have shoot thousands of times over the past several months. I hope to get some shots this season - maybe a big buck :)

November 18, 2002 - It's been my toughest bow season ever! I've seen 1 deer on our farm in Morgan County while hunting close to 20 times!! The last few years have been very tough hunting in that area. For the last 10+ years, I've kept track of the total deer I've seen while hunting on that land. Until 5 years ago, I'd see 80-100 deer during hunting season - of course that's hunting almost every afternoon and many of those deer were seen more than once. It's started a steady decline over the last 4 years, down to 50 - then 30 - then 22 last year and now only 1 during bow season. Last year, I saw 6 deer during bow season. I'm hunting in different locations on the farm, which is close to 2000 acres total. We have a 12-acre soybean field that was to wet to pick until last week. I haven't seen a single deer in that field all year - how can deer resist soybeans in November with the temp in the 30's? It's been a very depressing season so far and with the amount of deer sign ... I don't see it getting any better.

December 5, 2002 - It's been a tough year on the family farm.  I've hunt there a lot and seen very few deer.  I had a great trip to South Alabama with Ronnie Conerly on opening weekend of gun season.  Due to Amber's basketball schedule, I haven't been able to hunt at my club in Hale County since gun season opened.  I plan to take a few short trips down there this month and check it out - I hear the deer are really moving down there.  A friend of mine from the club, Rodney Johnson, harvested a big 240-pound buck in Kentucky this year - 13-points - I hope to get a picture from him and post on the website.

January 2, 2003 - I'm seeing a few deer however very few of them have any head gear. I've spent the last two weeks looking for some big deer sign to hunt and haven't located a big deer.  Maybe one will turn up soon.  I've found one area with a few small rubs but some big tracks.  I haven't hunted that area yet but plan to in the near future.

January 16, 2003 - The rut seems to be underway.  Several hunters have told me of seeing bucks chasing does and does with black tarsal glands.  I'm seeing a few deer but mostly at very low light.  I've found a couple of areas with some really big tracks and a few rubs.  I still haven't found the type of big buck sign I'd like to be hunting.  I feel the last two weeks of the season will be a very exciting!  Good luck and don't forget to submit those pictures.  The website is averaging around 75 visitors a day.

January 24, 2003 - I'm getting lots of stories of bucks on the prowl.  I've seen a few bucks but nothing of any size.  I've found some really large tracks and plan to hunt that deer a few times before the season closes.  I need a North wind to hunt that buck and it seems that's all were having with the artic blasts piled up to bulldoze southward.  I harvested a deer last week with my bow and one this week with a muzzleloader.  I hope to harvest a mature buck before the end of the season.

February 2003 - It was a strange season!  I saw several deer throughout the season but very few bucks and no wall hangers.  It was the first year I can remember where I didn't see a single big-racked deer.  I saw one mature buck and he had a bad rack - like a big 5-point cowhorn looking spike.  Not a good year for big deer.  I did manage to harvest a small buck with a bow to keep the streak alive and one with a muzzleloader.  I'm now in a holding pattern waiting on next season.  Enjoy the summer!
